What does the next generation want from an academic publisher like Emerald Group Publishing? Present a vision for the next generation of the business.
We presented Emerald Pearl, a social networking community platform for academics and researchers. Emerald Pearl provides tools for academics to assist them with networking, tracking impact of their work and increasing transparency in the publishing process, strengthening the relationship between publisher, editor, writer and peer reviewer.
The first journal article was published in 1665 and since then, not much has changed. Experts write articles based on emerging research, and these are reviewed by their peers, published in journals or books and then read by academic and students. Though this process remains the same, a majority of academics and students now read these articles online rather than in print. Academic publishers are struggling to innovate and provide digital options that encourage this practice and make the process more user-friendly for their customers.
For a full overview of our process, please check out our final group report here, which guides you through our process and outcome.
We presented Emerald Pearl at pitch day at the Emerald Group Publishing HQ in Bingley, Yorkshire. I was personally responsible for a three-minute elevator pitch to over sixty staff members, including Emerald’s C-Suite.
